My name is Hui Shuotong, I‘m a designer from China. I like to express my ideas through visual language, and I am also keen on observing and recording life in many ways. In my spare time, I often use my paintbrush to capture inspiration and my camera to record the beauty. I enjoy galloping on snowy roads and feeling the speed and freedom.
GENDERLESS CHINESE CHARACTER
Breaking Gender Frames In Language
In Chinese, many gender-related words embody deep stereotypes. For example, derogatory words such as '嫖娼 whoring', '奸淫 adultery' and '妒忌 jealousy' are often presented next to female character '女 female', while positive words such as 'hero', 'husband' and 'genius' are often associated with men. These words not only affect people's subconscious cognition, but also reflect the long-term shaping and prejudice of gender roles in society. Through the deconstruction and reconstruction of visual design, this project hopes to make people to become aware of and revisit these linguistic phenomena so as to break down the inherent gender frames.
