Designing Sambal: A Sambal Semiotic System
Visualising Indonesia’s sambal diversity through a semiotic design system
Designing Sambal is a semiotic design system exploring how sambal can be represented through visual communication. Inspired by the diversity of Indonesian sambals, the project uses pictograms, colour, and cultural adaptation to communicate ingredients, spice levels, and regional identity. Developed through research and experimentation, the system aims to make sambal more recognisable and culturally visible across contexts such as packaging, menus, and food communication.
