Zarer Lim is a designer whose work drifts between the physical and the digital. With a playful, poetic approach, he explores how everyday technologies might foster new ways of sensing, caring, and connecting—especially with the more-than-human world. Between pixels and paper, motion and meaning, his design practice is led by a curious hand—often misusing tools on purpose, and telling stories that sit with people a little longer.
Dreaming of an Interspecies Sensor
A speculative design project on light sensors, screens, and tree science.
What if trees could dance with us? A Friendly Hand asks. Made of paper, thread, and code, this sensing-machine senses light from a screen with subtle choreography. As part of Dreaming of an Interspecies Sensor, it reimagines our screens as portals for kinship, curiosity, and connection with trees. The result is whimsical, surreal and about as handy as a light sensor can get.
