Venessa is a creative with a focus on art direction and visual storytelling. Her interest in design started young, shaped by MapleStory edits and far too many late-night YouTube rabbit holes of music videos and funny ad compilations. She draws inspiration from film, music, and pop culture to create ideas that feel playful, and culturally relevant. Her work focuses on how design shapes perception and meaning, creating ideas that feel familiar, relatable, and just a little bit close to home.
Governing Identity Through Film
Exploring how institutional frameworks shape what is recognised as 'Singaporean' in film.
Governing Identity Through Film is a speculative and satirical project that examines how 'Singaporeanness' is shaped and regulated in local cinema. Through the fictional Singapore Representations Office (SRO), it shows how institutional frameworks and shared values guide storytelling, shaping audience expectations and defining what is recognised as 'Singaporean' and natural on screen. In doing so, the project highlights how repeated narratives become normalised over time, reinforcing familiar ways of seeing and limiting alternative representations of identity.
